Designing for Dark Mode: A Comprehensive Guide
It's not just about inverting colors. Discover the nuances of elevation and contrast in dark UI.
Dark mode is often misunderstood as simply inverting a color palette. However, true dark mode design requires a fundamental rethinking of how light, depth, and contrast work on a digital screen.
In physical space, we perceive depth through shadows. In a dark UI, shadows disappear into the background. Instead, we must rely on 'elevation'—using progressively lighter shades of gray or muted brand colors to indicate that an element is sitting closer to the user. Furthermore, pure black (#000000) causes intense eye strain when paired with white text due to high contrast halation. The most premium dark modes use deep, cool grays (like #111111) paired with off-white text to create a soothing, cinematic experience.
